The Health & Disability Commissioner has found that a GP failed to follow up abnormal test results and failed to inform his patient of those abnormal results.

As the physician who ordered the tests he had a responsibility to arrange further assessment of the patient’s condition, including referral for an urgent ultrasound scan.  The failure to do that meant his services were provided without reasonable care and skill.

The GP was to provide a written apology to the patient and also arrange an audit of his records to ensure that all abnormal tests results in recent times had been communicated to patients and followed up properly.
