Two construction firms have agreed with WorkSafe to an enforceable undertaking after a cyclist unfortunately lost her life while cycling passed a construction zone. A temporary route was set out for cyclists and pedestrians, but the cyclist collided with a truck coming into the site.

A WorkSafe investigation found that the construction firms failed to implement an effective temporary traffic management system and this put the health and safety of the public at risk.

An enforceable undertaking by the firms, as an alternative to a prosecution, is a commitment to improve health and safety, so these incidents do not occur again. The undertaking includes reparation to the victim’s family, a training programme for drivers, establishing further safety guidelines and raising cyclist awareness of construction sites. It will require an expenditure of $1,600,000 across the two firms.
