A recent Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal decision found an early childhood teacher not guilty of serious misconduct resulting from several incidents.

The Tribunal found that the nature of the physical contact between the teacher and young children was for their safety and was reasonable in the circumstance when no other options were available.

The decision emphasised the difference between the rules on physical contact for schools to what applies in an early childhood setting with young children needing guidance.  The physical contact was carried out gently and in accordance with the teacher’s training.

It was not done to discipline any child and was for their safety.
