The District Court has sentenced a teacher to 2 months home detention with special conditions after he shook his 6 month old son into unconsciousness. The baby suffered a subdural bleed to his brain.

The Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal noted that the teacher had no history of violence, and that this was a one off event that was unconnected with the teacher’s professional life.

The teacher took full responsibility for his actions, and there were no adverse effects of the trauma on the baby.

The Tribunal censured the teacher and ordered the Register to be annotated with the decision. The Tribunal also imposed a condition on the teacher’s practising certificate requiring him to report his conviction to any prospective employer.
