Tribunal censures teacher for ‘horrendous crimes against children’…
A qualified teacher has been convicted in the High Court on twenty one counts of offences against young children, including rape, attempted rape, unlawful sexual connection, attempted unlawful sexual connection and assault.
The High Court sentenced the man to 14 years and 6 months imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 7 years and 3 months.
The Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal censured the teacher but had no jurisdiction to deregister him or suspend his practising certificate as he was not currently registered, and did not hold a current practising certificate.
The Tribunal assured the public that given the nature of his convictions it would be virtually inconceivable that he would ever be granted registration.
The Tribunal refused to grant the man name suppression on the basis that there was no real evidence that the man would be in danger inside the prison environment if details of the case were released especially as the case had already attracted extensive publicity.
