The Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal held that an early childhood teacher who bought a class B drug off her colleague had committed serious misconduct. The Tribunal censured the teacher and ordered her to pay half of the complainant’s costs. The tribunal also ordered the teacher be de-registered in order to protect the public and uphold the integrity of the teaching profession.

In making their decision the Tribunal considered how the matter was disclosed after she confided in a colleague, her unblemished record, the lack of any adverse consequences on the children, and her assumption of responsibility for her actions, and the fact that she had already lost her job. However, the Tribunal noted that the purchase of ecstasy within the preschool put the welfare of the children at risk and reflected adversely on her fitness to teach. The teacher who sold the drug was also de-registered.
