A married teacher with three children has had her teacher’s registration cancelled after she entered into an inappropriate relationship with a year 13 student. The teacher had sexual intercourse with the student at his house, during school hours, and in the school grounds. The teacher also sent inappropriate messages to the student on Facebook, and offered the student sexual rewards as motivators for completing school work.

The teacher was struggling with depression at the time of the affair, and the stresses of being a working mum. The teacher stated that the student made her feel ‘special’ during a difficult time.

The Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal censured the teacher noting that the relationship was not a one-off but was sustained for a considerable period of time. The affair involved a number of sexual encounters, and was motivated by the teacher’s own needs.

The teacher was given complete name suppression in order to protect the identity of her school-age children.
