The Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal has ordered a teacher, who pleaded guilty to 22 offenses, to be deregistered.

The teacher dishonestly sought a benefit to which he was not entitled and was consequently overpaid by more than $100,000. The Tribunal found that the fraud had been partly committed while he was a teacher.

The Tribunal held that because of the gravity and seriousness of the offence, and the substantial amount of money owing, they had to uphold their responsibilities to the public by ordering his deregistration. Despite the teacher’s registration being expired at the time of the decision and his absence throughout the disciplinary process indicating that he had no indication of renewing it, the Tribunal felt that this result was appropriate as a fail safe to ensure the reputation of the profession was upheld.
