The Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal has found a Principal guilty of serious misconduct, for failing to take steps to protect the school’s pupils from the actions of a teacher, later convicted of numerous sexual assaults on young male pupils of the school.

The Principal was advised by the Police that the teacher was having pupils stay over at his home and that he should take action to stop this.  The Principal failed to get the teacher to stop, and failed to take advice or alert the Board of Trustees to the full contents of the Police letter.

The Tribunal found that if the Principal had acted to provide a safe environment the teacher’s offending would have been discovered much sooner.

As the Principal had ceased teaching, undertook not to resume teaching, and had an unblemished prior history, the Tribunal decided (by a slim margin) that they would censure, and not de-register, him. His failures to be proactive in protecting the pupils were seriously negligent.
