News Flash! Government seeking submissions on draft Te Ture Whenua Māori Bill
A draft Te Ture Whenua Māori Bill to replace Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 has been released for consultation.
Public consultation hui on the proposed changes in the draft Bill will be held nationwide in June. The deadline for submissions is Friday 3 July.
The reforms will impact on all owners and governors of Māori land and include:
- Important changes impacting on all Māori incorporations and ahu whenua Trusts including a new Rangatōpū governance model.
- New thresholds for decision making.
- The introduction of land management plans for governing bodies.
- An ability for owners to develop and implement rules which reflect tikanga.
- A new alternative dispute resolution process.
- New succession processes.
- A new administration agency called the Māori Land Service.
