The Law Commission has recommended changes to the parenthood laws. The recommendations concern issues relating to modern day parenthood including:

  • The legal status of sperm or egg donors;
  • The regulation of the DNA testing industry; and
  • The level of detail recorded on a child’s birth certificate in relation to information about egg or sperm donors.

Ministers of the Crown will have an opportunity to respond to the report by October 2005.  The report can be viewed on the Law Commission’s website at www.lawcom.govt.nz.
