A teacher convicted of understating her income to obtain cheaper rent from Housing NZ has escaped being deregistered.

The sentencing Judge imposed a community-based sentence so the teacher could continue as a teacher, “because she had much to offer” and was unlikely to reoffend.

The Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal has suspended the teacher for six months to mark the seriousness of the offending, and imposed a condition for three years that the teacher advise her employer of the conviction.
