Employer ordered to pay $27,500 for injury to worker
An employer who failed to take all practicable steps to ensure their employee was properly trained in the safe use of equipment was convicted and fined following the employee suffering serious injuries to their arm.
The Judge made it clear that a message needs to be sent to all employers that serious injuries resulting from breaches of the Health & Safety legislation would result in significant penalties. The Court set a fine of $12,500 and $15,000 reparation for the worker.
An employer’s obligation is to identify all hazards, and to then take all practicable steps to eliminate, isolate or minimise the hazards.
