The Waitangi Tribunal has recently issued a new direction relating to the kaupapa inquiry process. The directions included two new inquiries, relating to housing policy and social services and the Takutai Moana (Marine and Coastal Area) Act, and a revised order for hearing of the inquiries.

Kaupapa inquiries provide an opportunity for claimants to raise nationally significant issues affecting Māori. Currently, the following kaupapa inquiries have commenced: Military Veterans Kaupapa (Wai 2500); Health Services and Outcomes Kaupapa (Wai 2575); Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act (Wai 2660) and the National Fresh Water and Geothermal Resources (Wai 2358).

Two inquiries, Mana Wāhine Kaupapa (Wai 2700) and the Housing Policy and Services Kaupapa (Wai 2750), are currently at the preparation stage.
