Serious misconduct for holding a child in early education
A senior early childhood education teacher has been censured and ordered to undergo professional learning and development after she held a toddler she was trying to settle for a sleep.
Immobilisation of children is prohibited by the Early Childhood Services regulations. The toddler was held for about 30 minutes and became distressed.
The Disciplinary Tribunal found the teacher’s actions to be serious misconduct but at the lower end of the scale and imposed a penalty designed to rehabilitate the teacher.
