Road works fatality results in $87,000 penalty
During road works maintenance work a truck and trailer reversed over and killed a motorcyclist.
The employer needed to ensure its employees were aware of and correctly followed the traffic management plan to ensure vehicles obeyed the stop/go signs. Also radio communications should have been in place for dealing with an unauthorised entry into the workplace.
The employer was fined $39,000 and ordered to pay reparation of $48,000.
The company which operated the truck was also convicted, fined $42,750 and ordered to pay $72,000 reparation. Amongst the long list of actions to be taken was a requirement to either have a reversing camera or use a spotter at all times when reversing.
