When a claim is made for damage the insurer will deduct the excess from the claim. It is important to know whether there is one incident or multiple incidents giving rise to the claim.

In this case the insured had cover for her rental property and in May 2017 she became aware of damage caused to the house by her tenants.  When she made a claim to her insurer for the damage she discovered that a separate excess was applied to each event that caused damage.

This meant that damage caused by the tenants in the lounge and hallway resulted in a separate excess being applied, to damage to walls in three other rooms, where three separate excesses were also applied.  The four excesses were applied because the insured could not show that the damage occurred in one instance rather than in four separate events.
