Company fined $265,000 following workplace accident…
The District Court has convicted and fined a company after it failed to adequately train its workers in the safe maintenance of a machine. An employee tragically died after being crushed in a machine while he was carrying out maintenance. The company also failed to monitor its employees to ensure it could correct any unsafe practices.
The starting point for a fine in this case would have been $530,000, but the fine was reduced to $265,000. The company was ordered to pay $80,000 in emotional harm and $191,000 in consequential loses to the victim’s family in addition to being fined.
