Not For Profit fined $425,000 for Health & Safety breach...
An organisation has been found guilty of a Health & Safety breach after one of its customers tragically died. Of even more of a tragedy is that this was the second death of a customer from the same cause.
Following the first death the organisation drew up a Health & Safety plan to deal with the specific risk. However, the plan was not followed up with to ensure that employees were putting it into place. As a result the second death occurred.
It is no use putting in place a well written and comprehensive plan if it is not actually acted on. There must be a process to ensure it is implemented and this must be regularity checked and enforced.
Governing Boards must ensure that there are processes in place to make sure the boxes are not just being ticked but that the organisation understands the risks of its operations and follows the risk elimination and minimisation policies and practices.
