The Insurance Ombudsman has rejected a complaint from an insured after water leaked from their dryer and damaged the walls of their home.

They had purchased “gradual damage” extension insurance, but this only covered damage from a leaky pipe or water system.  The leak from the dryer was caused by a blocked sump and water gradually leaked out into the walls.

The Ombudsman held this was not a sudden flood, nor was it from a pipe or water system so was not covered by the extended insurance for gradual damage.

Once again it pays to carefully read the policy to know what insurance you are buying, to make sure it covers what you expect.
