The Health and Disability Commissioner has found that a patient suffered irreversible and avoidable blindness because of delays in being seen by Health NZ Canterbury.

The HDC required HNZ Canterbury to apologise to the patient and to report on the effectiveness of changes made to services, report on any ongoing clinical risk to patients due to delays and report on all adverse events in ophthalmology from July 2024 to June 2025 where delay was a contributing factor.

The HDC also requires HNZ National to report on it systems for improvements to patient management and to report on implementation of a national management system.

The HDC is concerned that HNZ National has a lack of appreciation for the significant capacity constraints in opthalmology which have been around for several years and she intends to monitor HNZ‘s actions to address this.
