Teachers’ lunch break working time…
The Employment Relations Authority has found that teachers employed under the secondary school collective employment agreement are entitled to a paid lunch break of one hour.
The wording is different to that used in the primary sector where it is specified that the lunch break is unpaid.
The decision means that teachers in secondary schools are required to work only 35 hours per week, not the 40 hours required in the primary sector.
The ERA decision turns on the particular wording of the collective agreement, so it is likely to be a ‘watch the space’ situation when the agreement is next negotiated or the government decides to legislate away the paid lunch break.
