The Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal has found a doctor guilty of professional misconduct after the doctor failed to properly treat a patient with melanoma.

The doctor excised a mole and sent it for testing.  The test results showed it to be a melanoma and recommended more tissue around the site to be removed.

The doctor failed to carry out a wider excision and failed to tell the patient about the melanoma.  If the cancer had been more appropriately handled there was a much better chance of successful treatment.  Sadly the patient died before the Tribunal hearing.

The doctor was censured and suspended for three months and will have conditions imposed on his practice for three years if he seeks to practice in New Zealand again.
