Retirement village breaches code of patient rights...
The Health and Disability Commissioner has found that a retirement village failed to provide services with reasonable care and skill relating to medication administration, dealing with a patient fall and overall clinical management.
The prescribing of medications did not follow safe prescribing guidelines, and there was a lack of appropriate assessment and referral.
The oversight of the medication administration in the dementia unit was not in line with acceptable practice and there was a lack of clinical assessment.
The retirement village is to apologise to the patient’s family, and also to provide further education to staff regarding recognizing deterioration, dementia, falls and fractures.
The retirement village has also put in place other changes by increasing staff rostered on and putting in place an education coordinator to support and monitor staff education
