The Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman has upheld a customer complaint about a declined insurance claim due to delay and a missed flight.

The passenger’s flight was delayed, and he missed his connecting flight.  He needed accommodation and a new flight ticket.

The airline originally said the flight was delayed due to a crew issue.  The insurance claim was declined as “crew issue” was not one of the risks covered.

It turned out that the “crew issue” was that they were delayed due to bad weather.  Bad weather was covered by the policy.  IFSO was able to get the insurer to pay the claim once the new information on the cause of the delay became known.

If you suffer a delay and need to make a claim, it pays to get the specific reasons so you can claim under your travel insurance.
