Law change now allows victims of spousal abuse to dissolve their marriages…
A recent law change has enabled victims of family violence from spouses to quickly dissolve their marriages.
Typically, spouses must be separated for a period of two years for a dissolution of marriage to be granted by the Court.
This meant that spouses who had been abused were required to stay married to their abuser, rather than being able to swiftly dissolve the marriage.
A member of the public who had been through this type of situation reached out to their local MP and managed to introduce the law change to Parliament.
Law changes such as these are important to the development of family law in New Zealand but can be difficult to navigate if you aren’t aware of the changes. If there is confusion around the dissolution of marriage process, it pays to seek advice from a professional expert in the Family Law area.
