Professional misconduct for medication error…
The Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal has found a nurse guilty of professional misconduct after she failed to read a patient's medication chart correctly and omitted to administer one of his fortnightly medicines.
The nurse ticked the chart to show that the medication had been given on five occasions when it had not been administered.
The tribunal ordered that the nurse undergo further training on medications and also undergo mentoring for six months once she returns to the practise. (The nurse having left the profession due to a lack of confidence despite a previous well-respected career).
The Tribunal’s penalty decision was designed to assist the practitioner’s rehabilitation and protect the public.
