A long-anticipated Bill to update this legislation has reached its First Reading through Parliament. It aims to provide a modern framework for governance and accountability for Societies and for the officers that run them.

The Bill adds various requirements which were not in the original legislation, including:

  • Clearly outlining duties of officers of Societies
  • Requiring certain matters to be included in constitutions of Societies
  • Providing an express mechanism for Societies to amalgamate with each other
  • A framework whereby court action can be taken to recover a financial gain unlawfully received by an officer or member
  • Duties to disclose conflicts of interest of officers

It also expands on many of the existing principles, such as not being able to make a pecuniary gain as a member or officer of a Society.

In this webinar, commercial partner Claire Tyler will take you through the key parts of the Act, and how they will apply to you if you are an officer or member of a Society.
