In a recent settlement with Central North Island (CNI) Iwi, the Government transferred $195.7 million worth of Crown forest land to the CNI Iwi Collective. In addition, the Collective will receive the rentals that have accumulated on the land since 1989, which are worth approximately $223 million, and an annual income stream of about $13 million.

On 17 June 2008, the Government introduced the Affiliate Te Arawa Iwi and Hapu Claims Settlement Bill.
This proposed legislation will give effect to the deed of settlement signed between a collective of 11 Te Arawa affiliated iwi and hapu (“Te Arawa”) and the Crown on 11 June 2008. The Bill will settle the historical claims of the Te Arawa groups that signed the deed of settlement.

The Government recently introduced a new process for the sale of all Crown-owned land.
The new process responds to community and Government concerns about the proposed Landcorp sale of Whenuakite on the Coromandel Peninsula and Rangiputa in Northland. Landcorp has now agreed to retain these properties, along with seven others, and will continue to farm, and protect the conservation and other natural values, of the properties.

The Government recently outlined plans for an emissions trading scheme and for new forestry and environmentally friendly land management initiatives. The emissions trading scheme is aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote environmentally friendly behaviour and create business opportunities for New Zealanders.
